Hilton Head Off Plantation Real Estate

Relics unearthed in the Lowcountry indicate that the area was inhabited early as 10,000 B.C., when Native American hunters, fishermen, and farmers lived off the bounty of the land, harvesting oysters and shellfish and hunting deer and wild boar.

In 1663, William Hilton, an English sea captain sailing from Barbados in search of tropical land on which to establish English plantations, claimed the Island for the British crown. He established his legacy by naming the island after himself; it was originally called Hilton’s Headland. By 1766, 25 families lived on Hilton Head Island. By 1860, 24 plantations were in operation, the main crops being cotton, indigo, sugarcane, and rice.

In the 1940’s, a group of timbermen recognized potential in the Island’s tall, straight pine trees and purchased most of the Island for lumber. In 1956, Charles Fraser, the son of one of the timbermen, realized that Hilton Head had more to offer than timber, and thus was born the idea of a beach resort community.

Hilton Head is the second largest barrier island on the East Coast (Long Island, New York, is the first). It is five by twelve miles, and its shape resembles a shoe with the “heel” on the north, where Port Royal Sound joins the ocean. There are roughly 30,000 acres of landmass, with 28,000 acres of dry land plus 2,000 acres of marsh.

Hilton Head Island offers a small town atmosphere, with about 35,000 full-time residents and amenities such as 13 miles of pristine oceanfront, 25 golf clubs, 350 tennis courts, 100-plus miles of bike paths, 300 shops, 200 restaurants, ten marinas, a center for the arts, and a full-service hospital. Hilton Head has its own airport, which is serviced by American, Delta and United as well as accommodating private aircraft.

A variety of public and private schools provide superior preschool, primary and secondary education, including Hilton Head Preparatory, Sea Pines Montessori Academy and Hilton Head Christian Academy. There is also Heritage Academy, which is associated with the International Junior Golf Academy, Smith Stearns Tennis Academy and Van der Meer Tennis Academy.
