Daufuskie Island Real Estate

Daufuskie Island’s first recorded inhabitants were the Yemassee Indians in 1664, and in 1781, patriots formed the Bloody Legion to protect homes during the Revolutionary War. Daufuskie thrived in the 1800’s on the production of Sea Island cotton. In 1972, acclaimed South Carolina author Pat Conroy wrote “The Water is Wide” based on his work as a school teacher on the island; the book's film adaptation, “Conrack," stars Jon Voight.

Today, the 5,200-arce island—surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Cooper and New Rivers, and Mungen Creek—is accessible only by private boat or passenger ferry. Crushed oyster shell and dirt roads dominate the landscape, and the preferred methods of transportation are golf cart, bicycle, foot, or horse-driven carriage.

Developments include Bloody Point, Haig Point, Melrose, Mungen River Landing, Oak Ridge, and the Landings at Cooper River. The island boasts golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, and Rees Jones, as well as tennis courts by Stan Smith. Daufuskie's equestrian center has five trails that wind through moss-draped oaks and along pristine sandy beaches. Several community pools, beach clubs, fitness centers, and restaurants (both casusal and gourmet) add to the ambiance, as does the Melrose Inn.
